Description: Williamsburg VA- Virginia, The Raleigh Bake Shop, Vintage Postcard Meals served to hungry travelers and local residents who patronized the Raleigh Tavern were prepared in a building on the site of the reconstructed kitchen and bakery. Servants carried the food across the courtyard into the tavern where most customers paid a fixed price for the meal of the day. Those meals consisted of readily available foods- meat or fish, vegetables and perhaps fruit, bread, and small beer. Tavern keepers also prepared special meals on demand. The baked goods offered for sale at the Raleigh Bakery today have been developed from recipes in rare eighteenth century cookbooks in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. H. S.
