Description: THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE EIGHTH DIMENSION Why is there a watermelon there? & I'll explain later Two Classic Film Quote Buttons Two repro buttons with quotes from The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai: Why is there a watermelon there? and I'll explain later. "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" (1984), directed by W.D. Richter, is a cult film combining science fiction, pulp fiction, alien invasion, romance, transdimensional travel, and rock'n'roll. The premise centers upon the efforts of the polymath Dr. Buckaroo Banzai, a physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and rock musician, to save the world by defeating a band of inter-dimensional aliens called Red Lectroids from Planet 10. The film is a cross between the action/adventure and sci-fi film genres and also includes elements of comedy and romance. It starred Peter Weller ("Robocop"), John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd, and Ellen Barkin. In one scene of the film, Banzai (Peter Weller) and New Jersey (Jeff Goldblum) are walking through the Banzai Institute and pass a watermelon in a giant clamp. New Jersey asks "Why is there a watermelon there?" and Banzai replies, "I'll explain later." Supposedly, the watermelon was inserted into the film to see how closely the dailies were being watched by the film's producer. The Banzai fan club newsletter claimed that Banzai was working to create a watermelon that was tough enough to be air-dropped into famine areas, providing a combination of food and "water". The phrase 'I'll Explain Later' is quite possibly a homage to Doctor Who. The Third Doctor's usual retort when asked to explain how some particular bit of widgetry was going to save the day was "I'll explain later." In the rare case of the Doctor respecting his questioner, he would immediately start explaining what he was doing in exacting detail, which would rather put out observers who were not so favoured (see: The Brigadier in "Invasion of the Dinosaurs.")
