Description: DATING TO THE 1890’S THIS PIECE IS ACQUIRED FROM THE ORIGINAL NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND ESTATE AND IS TWO PIECE IN CONSTRUCTION. THE SKIRT IS IN A BEAUTIFUL OMBRE STRIPED PURPLE SILK WITH A HIGH SHINE SATIN FINISH WITH THE BOTTOM BOUND IN COTTON VELVET. INTERIOR SKIRT LINED IN BUCKRAM TO GIVE IT STANCE WITH PUNCHED SILK TAFFETA BOTTOM RUFFLES. THE SKIRT HAS A BERRY SPRIG PATTERN SHEER BLACK STIFF SILK GAUZE OVERLAY WITH THICK GATHERS AT THE REAR WAIST. THICK WOVEN WAISTBAND AT THE TOP, HOOKS CLOSED AT THE REAR AND IS FULLY LINED IN THE BLACK SILK TAFFETA. THE BODICE IS FULLY BONED THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR WITH THE INSIDE FULLY LINED IN BLACK SILK TAFFETA. PETERSHAM STAMPED WITH THE LABEL AS PICTURED. THE SILK TAFFETA IS ENCASED IN THE MATCHING GAUZE WITH MASSIVE MUTTON SLEEVES THAT TAPER TO THE BOTTOM WITH JET BEADING ON NET TRIMMING THE WRIST AND THE PURPLE STRIPED SILK IN RUCHED RUFFLING AROUND THE CUFF. PLEATED PURPLE SILK IS ON THE CENTER FRONT PANEL WITH JET ON NET TRIMMING BOTH AROUND THE YOKE AS WELL AS RUFFLES WHICH BEGIN IN THE FRONT AND RUN OVER THE SHOULDER. THE RUFFLES HAVE POINTED MYLAR JET DANGLING BEADING THROUGHOUT. PLEATED GAUZE HIGH COLLAR WITH RUCHED GATHERING IN THE REAR. CONDITION: SMALL WEAR TO THE PLEATED SILK ON THE FRONT TOP. SMALL ABSENCES OF JET ARE SEEN WHEN STUDIED WITH SOME SMALL TINY OXIDATION POINTS TO THE JET NET RUFFLE. SMALL SEAM UNDER THE LEFT UNDERARM HAS OPENED AND NEEDS A STITCH BACK INTO PLACE. THE BOTTOM SKIRTING HAS A SMALL SPLITTING IN ONE AREA OF THE GAUZE AND I PERSONALLY WOULD SHORTEN SLIGHTLY AT THAT POINT TO REMOVE THE DAMAGE. A MOST EXCEPTIONAL ANTIQUE VICTORIAN 1890’S BUSTLE GOWN.
