Description: Offered here is a very rare stoneware jar bearing the mark, “J. MILLER/ALEX.” This is the work of potter James Miller who potted in Alexandria, Virginia from 1824-1826. Only a handful of his marked wares have survived - this small jar being one of them. The jar measures 8 ¾” tall with a width of about 8” at its widest and having a capacity of approximately 1-gallon. Cobalt highlights to each of the tab handles and a circle around the stamped maker’s mark. This jar has fantastic color and a glassy salt-glaze finish. No restoration. Overall, this little gem survives in excellent condition. The only issues being a single tiny chip under each handle and one at the base (see photos). Normal firing flaws and potting imperfections: The rim is slightly misshapen caused by stacking in the kiln. The “J” in the maker’s mark is lacking and only a portion of the “A” in ALEX is impressed. The rest of the mark is legibly stamped. This is an opportunity to own one of the rarest marks in Alexandria, Virginia stoneware. It would be a highlight of any serious collection.
