Thomas Lawrence Portrait of a Lady Oil Painting with WORCESTER ART MUSEUM PROVENANCE Artist: Attributed to Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) Provenance: This painting was exhibited at the Worcester Art Museum as a painting done by Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) from December 11, 1921 - January 8, 1922 in their "Loan Exhibition of English and American Paintings of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries", Worcester, Massachusetts. It was number #15 in that exhibition and the original exhibition label is on the back of the frame. we wish to thank Rebecca Morin, Head Librarian for the Worcester Art Museum, for her assistance in researching this painting's exhibition history. Other provenance is from the Collection of Mrs. Chester Whitin Lasell, Whitinsville, Massachusetts. Lasell was the president of Whitin Machine Works and a philanthropist. In 1890, a 43 room mansion was built for him at 120 Hill Street in Whitinsville, MA., which would become known as The Whitin Lasell Manor. Some of the rooms in the mansion include an auditorium, library, billiards room, solarium and there are approximately 15 unique fireplaces. The canvas appears to have been relined at the beginning of the 20th century. Painting's size: 30" by 25"Signed: No. Framed: Yes. The ornate museum quality 7" wide and 5" deep antique frame measures 45" by 40" and has several nicks/chips; age cracks and spots of missing molding. Overall, the frame is in good condition and is a fantastic piece of art, itself!!! Painting's Condition: Spots of inexpertly done inpainting; surface dirt/grime; some alligatoring & stable crazing. Otherwise, the painting is in good, overall condition. Please enlarge the digital images to see the extent of the damage. Varnish has also recently been applied to the painting after the sitter was lightly cleaned because of an extensive amount of browned/oxidized varnish over time that was on the sitter's skin. Please contact us if you would like to see a digital image of what the sitter looked like before this cleaning... it's a quite noticeable difference! There is still surface dirt/grime around the sitter that will need to be cleaned. Ultraviolet Light Test: 20% scattered inpainting. Additional Comments: Please allow us to start by writing that we am VERY apprehensive about offering this large and wonderful oil painting without a reserve! In 1921/1922, this painting was represented by the Worcester Art Museum as a painting done by famous listed British artist- Thomas Lawrence in their exhibition! The Worcester Art Museum felt confident enough to represent this painting as being done by Lawrence, who died less than 100 years earlier, which suggests that there is probably more information about this painting somewhere. WAM's collection of nearly 38,000 objects contains superlative examples representing 51 centuries of creative spirit and cultural heritage. Since acquiring the Higgins Armory collection in 2013, WAM is now home to the second-largest collection of arms and armor in the Americas, next only to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. WAM was the first museum in the world to purchase a Monet painting of water lilies (1910) and a painting by Gauguin (1921). It was also one of the first American museums to exhibit photography as fine art (1904), as well as to install an entire work of architecture – a 12th-century Romanesque chapter house – as a permanent exhibit. Chester Lasell was a philanthropist and could purchase just about anythiong that he wanted, as you can tell by the mansion he owned. As mentioned above, there is probably more information about this painting's provenance somewhere and it may be in Lasell's paperwork- if it has survived the test of time. Since I don't have access to Lasell's personal paperwork (if it still exists), I have no way of knowing. This painting's sensitively rendered composition is everything that you would expect... and hope to see in a painting by Thomas Lawrence! However since the painting is not signed and to my understanding, there is no current "academic" expert on Lawrence's work, I am only attributing this painting to Lawrence. Based on the painting's STRONG provenance, quality and age, I believe the evidence speaks for itself!!!
