The Irish Wolfhound is a breed of large sighthounds, which is among the largest of all breeds of dog. By its presence and substantial size, the breed has inspired literature, poetry, and mythology, and was used as a guardian dog and for hunting wolves (hence the name). An old breed of dog that became scarce in more modern times, in 1885 Captain Graham founded the Irish Wolfhound Club and Breed Standard of Points to establish and agree the ideal to which breeders should aspire. In 1902 the breed was declared the regimental mascot of the Irish Guards and is also a national symbol of Ireland. John Amadeus Kiernan Donovan (1907 – 1993) was a practicing attorney in Virginia from 1933 until 1983, a politician who served part-time in the Virginia Senate representing Fairfax County from 1952 until 1964. More importantly he and his wife were breeders of Irish Wolfhounds, he served as president of the Old Dominion Kennel Club, and between 1976 to 1991 he was the author of nine dog books about the Irish Wolfhound but also about dogs in famous classic writings.
