His work with his band Cecil Taylor Unit still sounds as complex and inaccessible as it did a half century ago. But there was another side of his artistry when he played solo piano that is accessible and at times poetic. He wrote "I've always tried to be a poet more than anything else". Whilst his piano expeditions explore uncharted territories, there are moments of sheer beauty for those who can be patient enough to listen to the recordings all the way through. Taylor passed away in 2018 at the age of 89. All of his solo piano records were done in concert. He usually played for about one hour with no interruption. There was little risk in recording him live as he always played well. This special collection of four concert recordings covers close to three decades from 1972 to 1999. INDENT, recorded at Antioch College in Ohio marks the first time Cecil's style of performance turns into music of flow and structure (a definition that had also applied to Taylor's colleague Randy Weston on his solo performances). SILENT TONGUES was recorded later in Switzerland during the Montreux jazz festival. These records had been available for some time. MYSTERIES:UNTITLED, which was recorded in New York City as part of a Bösendorfer festival, is a more recent release. The last performance comes from Switzerland again; POSCHIAVO was recorded in 1999. All four together reflect the artistry of a great pianist. The set is a limited edition that comes in a wooden box, painted in red in the Japanese URUSHI style. It is only available on Ebay.
