Together these publications will eventually cover all freight stock running on BR, both BR and privately owned. All International Ferry Vehicles i.e. those carrying 12 figure RIV numbers are excluded from this publication as they will be the subject of a separate publication. The format used in this book is the same as that used in British Rail Wagon Fleet Volume 5 because the number of wagons covered meant that it was only practical to include wagons remaining in service. Private Owner wagons are numbered in a separate series to BR owned wagons. Originally each company operating wagons had its own number series but following the introduction of TOPS (Total Operations Processing System) each company was allocated an alpha prefix "owner" code and wagons were numbered in the series 1000 - 99999. The "owning" prefixes appropriate to this publication are as follows:- ABP = Associated British Ports Ltd ALCN = Alcan Lynemouth Ltd ALG = Algeco UK Ltd AMOC = Amoco UK Ltd APCM = Blue Circle Industries Ltd AO = Associated Octet Co. P. Dibden TRL = Tiger Rail Ltd TWT = Tyne & Wear Tranport VDBJ = Van Den Bergh & Jurgens Ltd TOPS was introduced by BR in 1972 and each vehicle was allocated a three letter TOPS code. Originally all Private Owner wagons were allocated TOPS codes commencing with P (non-tanks) or T (tanks) but in 1984 BR recoded wagons with J, K, U and X TOPS codes to vacate these letters for eventual expansion of the private owner TOPS codes series. This is now taking place and in respect of codes allocated to stock in this volume the following letters apply (although it should be noted that in the short term wagons may continue to carry their earlier P-prefixed code):- 1. First letter = Main type group J = Privately owned bogie wagons K = Specialised series P = 2 and 3-axle wagons T = Tank wagons Z = Service, 2-axle freight 2. Second letter = Sub-division of main type 3. Third letter = Brake type A = Air Brake Only B = Air Brake and Vacuum Pipe F = AFI Brake O = No Brake (Hand Only), Unfitted Q = No Brake (Hand Only), Air Pipe Only V = Vacuum Brake Only W = Vacuum Brake/Air Pipe X = Dual Vacuum and Air Brakes Throughout this publication the TOPS and Design codes for each number series are applicable to all wagons within that series unless indicated otherwise. Many wagons are shown on TOPS as stored including those on short term store whilst awaiting overhaul. Only those on long term store have been identified as such in this publication. Brief information is provided on the operations of wagons in this publication. However, as traffic patterns change wagons may be hired out to different users and this can only be regarded as a guide. The descriptions of wagons includes their primary use. It should be noted that on occasions they may be found on different duties e.g. seasonal traffic. The compilers wish to acknowledge the contributions made by Darren Powell, David Smith and all the photographers, with particular thanks to Peter (fold and Stewart Mott without whose support this book would not have been published.
