Description: About this work: A wonderful 19th century English School portrait of a seafaring gentleman. This portrait depicts a fashionable young gentleman in naval officer attire pointing towards a seascape with ships. He holds a telescope in his right hand and stands against a large cannon facing the water. The gentleman and artist are currently unknown, although a letter from Heirloom & Howard Limited in London dated 11/24/1978 states that the man is Vice Admiral Sir William Johnstone-Hope. The letter references a coat of arms, which was likely kept with the painting at some point but has since been lost. The work is oil on canvas and is housed in an antique frame. A label from the Scottish art dealer Daniel Shackleton is found the back. Size: 30 inches tall by 25 inches wide (painting) 34 inches tall by 29 inches wide by 3 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Private collection; Acquired from the above Condition: Good overall antique condition. Wax relined on later stretcher. Surface craquelure throughout commensurate with age. Scattered inpainting throughout. Antique frame with losses to gilding and wear.
