Description: These medieval silver coins were minted by the Princes of Moscow and later Tsars of Russia from 1362 to 1718. The most famous rulers to issue them were Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great. They are known as wire money due to their unique method of manufacture. A piece of silver wire would be hammered flat and then struck between two coin dies, thereby impressing the designs onto the silver. This hand-produced technique results in their distinctive irregular shape. One side of the coin features the ruler on horseback and the other lists their name and titles in Cyrillic lettering. As part of his modernisation efforts, Peter the Great replaced wire money with round, machine-made coins in 1718. You are purchasing one coin. They weigh just under half of a gram each.
