Failure Is Not An Option is a rare first printing and is signed by Kranz, but it's also a former library book in acceptable condition. There are library stamps and decals. The library's installed covering surrounds the dust jacket and is glued inside the book. There are bumps and scrapes on the edges of the book. The corners are bent. There are slight stains. See pictures for details. In Failure Is Not An Option, Kranz was there as the space race began. As an aerospace engineer, he directed missions of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, including Apollo 11's first lunar landing and the nail-biting episode of Apollo 13, in which three astronauts nearly died. Kranz is one of the main characters in the 1995 top movie "Apollo 13," portrayed by actor Ed Harris. He is seen in the film with a close-cut haircut and wearing vests that his wife made during Mission Control flights. There, he came up the phrase "tough and competent," known as the "Kranz dictum." Kranz is active at age 91 years old. First Bookshop caught up with him at the Wings Over Houston airshow in 2021. A picture of him signing Failure Is Not An Option at the event is included.
