Ernest Lawson Original Painting - Connecticut Fields, Old Lyme, CT, 1910

Description: Ernest Lawson (March 22, 1873 – December 18, 1939) was one of the first American Impressionists. Lawson was primarily a landscape painter, his style heavily influenced by John Henry Twatchman, Julian Alden Weir, and Alfred Sisley. He was one of the artists who studied with Twatchman and Childe Hassam at the Florence Griswold House in Old Lyme, Connecticut, at the turn of the century. He also summered with the painting community in Cos Cob. William Merritt Chase considered Lawson America's greatest landscape painter, an endorsement that carried cachet. During the urbanization of America, bucolic New England landscape paintings were in demand, especially by New York City collectors. In 1891, Lawson moved from Kansas to New York and enrolled in classes at the Art Students League, studying under Twatchman, who introduced him to Impressionism and was the central influence of his formative years. He continued to study with Twachtman and Weir during summers in Connecticut in the 1890s. One art historian has noted, "Lawson was a product of the art colony movement." Lawson visited France in 1893 and studied at the Academie Julian with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. He practiced plein air painting in southern France and at Moret-sur-Loing, where he met the English Impressionist Alfred Sisley. In 1894, Lawson exhibited two paintings in the Paris Salon. Lawson shared a Paris studio that year with Somerset Maugham who modeled the tormented artist for his character "Frederick Lawson" in his 1915 novel Of Human Bondage. Back in the United States, Lawson married his former art teacher, Ella Holman. In 1908, Lawson became a member of The Eight, a group of artists who protested the restrictive exhibition policies of the conservative, powerful National Academy of Design. The group staged an independent exhibition at the prestigious Macbeth Galleries in New York City which became a "succès de scandale" and patrons flocked to the exhibit to see a startling range of modern representational art. Later that year, he was named an associate member of the National Academy of Design and he was made a full academician in 1917. He exhibited as a member of the Canadian Art Club from 1911 to 1915. He benefited from regular gallery representation, won many prizes throughout his career, and was highly regarded by his peers. Signed lower left E.
