Description: This is a mug made by the Empire Porcelain Co, England, to celebrate the Coronation of Edward VIII. It measures approximately 7cm tall and 7cm wide. Edward VIII was the Prince of Wales and King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of the British Dominions and Emperor of India from January to December 1936, when he abdicated in order to marry the divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson of the United States. He was the only British sovereign to voluntarily resign the crown. The coronation was due to take place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937. Preparations had already begun and souvenirs were on sale when Edward VIII abdicated on 11 December 1936. The planned coronation was cancelled, leaving many businesses with now valueless memorabilia intended to commemorate the coronation. Coins planned to be introduced in January 1937 were melted down following the abdication. Edward's brother George VI and sister-in-law Elizabeth were crowned on the same date instead.
