Sometimes a shrub growing only 2 meters or more tall, it can reach reach large tree size and specimens up to 25 metres can be found in the coastal forests of Kenya.The plant yields an attractive, good quality wood and is often harvested from the wild for both local use and for trade. It is often grown as an ornamental and street tree, valued in particular for its display of open, red seedpods and black seeds.Riverine and coastal bushland; woodland with Julbernardia, Cynometra, Brachystegia; dry evergreen forest fringes; semideciduous often flooded forest; open ground with Hyphaene; often on coral; abandoned sisal plantations; at elevations to 500 meters.Description: This ornamental tree can grow anywhere from 6 feet to 80 feet tall, remaining at an average of 16 feet in its native habitat, with a round canopy of deep green, shiny leaves contrasted against an attractive yellowish to grayish-brown trunk. In late summer it emits dense clusters of fragrant flowers that are attractive to pollinators. In fall the fruit follows and when it dries, it splits open to reveal a red interior that houses three velvety bluish-black seeds, or “pearls.” Cultivation & Culture: Majidea zanguebarica is hardy Zone 9 to 11, but is commonly used as a container plant or for bonsai elsewhere.
