Laurence, constitutes the first comprehensive edition of Shaw's correspondence, and will eventually consist of four volumes, containing more than 2,500 letters, ranging over a period of 77 years, between 1874 and 1950, assembled from every known source in the British Isles and the United States, as well as from sources in Ireland, France, Germany, Holland, South Africa, Australia, and the USSR. The letters cover every area of Shavian interest: drama, music, art, public speaking, women, sex, religion, phonetics, medicine, economics, political science, et cetera. Combined with the editor's extensive and thorough (but unobtrusive) annotations, the volumes will constitute a definitive biography, fully and accurately revealing Shaw as he has never previously been seen. This first volume covers the years 1874-97 the period from Shaw's eighteenth year, as a land agent's clerk in Dublin, through his socialist and journalistic apprenticeships in London, to the eve of his emergence as a major dramatist and dazzling personality at the end of the century. Of the 700 letters included in their entirety in this volume, two-thirds are previously unpublished. And of the rest, many have appeared earlier only in brief extracts, in corrupt and heavily excised texts, or in obscure newspapers, journals, and memoirs. There are 170 correspondents represented. Of extreme importance are the first complete publication of Shaw's letters ... _gsrx_vers_625 (GS 6.9.7 (625))
