AMERCOM #ACHY12 1/72 Westland Wessex HU-5, RNFAA No. 845 NAS, HMS Bulwark, R08

Description: NO RESERVE. 1/72 Westland Wessex HU-5 Utility Helicopter / RN (Royal Navy) Service Troop Transport Helicopter, RNFAA (Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm) Serial Number XS507, Unit "B", Squadron Symbol "C", No. 845 NAS (Naval Air Squadron) which deployed on Royal Navy Commando Carrier HMS Bulwark, Pennant "R08" in 1971-1972. The Westland Wessex helicopter was British-built turbine-powered development of the Sikorsky H-34 (known as the Choctaw in U.S. service) which was produced and developed by Westland Aircraft (subsequently Westland Helicopter). The type was initially produced for the Royal Navy and first flew on June 20, 1958. Production lasted from 1958 to 1970 and a total of 382 were built. It was introduced into service in 1961. The RAF (Royal Air Force) and the RAN (Royal Australian Navy) would also procure the type. The first version of the Wessex was the HAS.1 anti-submarine aircraft, 140 of which were built. This was upgraded to the HAS.3 (3 new-built development aircraft followed by 43 converted HAS.1s). The RAF version was the HC.2 which consisted of a prototype converted from a HAS.1 and 73 new-builts, while the RAN version was the HA.31, 27 of which were built. The HU-5, as represented by this model, was a purpose-built troop transport for carrying 16 Royal. A total of 101 were built. The Royal Navy used their Wessex helicopters until 1984 but the RAF only ceased operating theirs in 2003. The HMS Bulwark was originally a Centaur-class Light Carrier. Begun on May 10, 1945. two days after the end of WWII in Europe, she was launched in June 22, 1948 but not commissioned until November 4, 1954. She participated in combat operations during the Suez Crisis of 1956, during which her aircraft flew 600 sorties. No. 845 NAS was embarked at the time as her helicopter squadron. Bulwark was decomissioned in 1958 for conversion to a Commando Carrier, re-entering service in 1960. She would serve off-and-on until finally being decommissioned a last time in 1981, to eventually be scrapped in 1984. No. 845 NAS might have deployed on Bulwark in other years besides 1971-1972 but this was the only period for which we found information. Could not confirm that the camouflage scheme used on the model fit the 1971-1972 timeframe. Model can be displayed 'on the ground' on its landing gear or 'in flight' on the stand provided as shown in our pictures. Diecast model with plastic parts. AmerCom #ACHY12. MIB but the example of the model being offered was removed from it packaging for taking the pictures used in this listing. This was done by separating the edges of the clear plastic cover that fits over the model from those of its cardboard base card and then re-attaching these with clear tape. Also note that the model's and helicopter blades came awkardedly-packed in a bundle of plastic wrap. After finishing the pictures, these were placed in a small ziplock plastic bag and inserted back in the packaging. FOR ANYONE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HOW TO INTERPRET A MODEL'S SCALE, THE MODEL'S FUSELAGE IS 8 1/4 INCHES LONG AND ITS FOUR-BLADED ROTOR IS 9 INCHes IN DIAMETER. INCLUDING THE LENGTH OF THE MAIN ROTOR THAT EXTENDS BEYOND THE MODEL'S NOSE AND THAT OF THE TAIL ROTOR THAT EXTENDS BEYOND THE REAR OF THE MODEL'S FUSELAGE, THE MODEL HAS AN OVERALL LENGTH OF 10 3/8 INCHES.
