Description: $25 Series E War Savings Bond, The Series E War Bonds were a type of savings bond issued by the United States government during World War II to help finance the war effort. It was first issued in May 1941 and was available for purchase until December 1980. The physical size of the bond was reduced in 1944 to save paper and money. After1980, the War Bond program was phased out and replaced by other savings and investment products. Today, War Bonds are no longer available for purchase, but they remain an important part of U.S. financial history and serve as a reminder of the sacrifices and contributions of the American people during World War II. World War II officially started on September 1,1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. The conflict quickly spread throughout Europe and eventually involved most of the world's nations, including many in Africa and Asia. The war in Europe officially ended on May 8, 1945, with the unconditional surrender of Germany. However, the war in Asia continued until August 15, 1945, when Japan announced its surrender following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The formal signing of the instrument of surrender took place on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, officially marking the end of World War II. The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, and ended on July 27, 1953. The war was fought between North Korea (supported by the Soviet Union and China)and South Korea (supported by the United States and other Western nations). The conflict arose from tensions between the communist North and the democratic South and eventually escalated into a full-scale war. Although a ceasefire was signed on July 27, 1953, the Korean War was never officially declared over, as a formal peace treaty was never signed. Instead, the ceasefire established a demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas, which remains in place to this day, and a state of armed peace continues between North and South Korea.
