The obverse had always featured Adolph Weinman's classic Walking Liberty design along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year. The reverse, designed by the 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "1OZ. FINE SILVER" and "ONE DOLLAR" also encompass the reverse. In 2021, for the first time in 35 years, the classic American Silver Eagle was updated with an enhanced obverse design and a brand new reverse design! Before production could begin on the new Type 2 Silver Eagle, production had to come to an end with the original design which is now referred to as the Type 1 Silver Eagle. This 2021 W $1 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle Type 1 was struck at the West Point Mint and has been certified GEM Reverse Proof by NGC!
