Description: 1825 Justin Salisbury Antique American Silhouettes Pair RARE We have a rare pair of silhouettes here attributed to Justin Salisbury. Usually, his works are framed in round pewter frames. These, however, are in round hardwood frames. They are period. The frames with folky flair measure 7 inches with the opening of the silhouettes at 2.5 inches. I believe the wood used is maple. They have nice grains, with the man's frame displaying attractive tiger maple traits. The original backboards show tremendous, untouched patina. They are fitted very tightly. The silhouettes are well cut. The woman's forehead has a touch of graphite, while the man has his hair and rolled collars in graphite. His shirt collar is inked. The cream colored wove paper of the silhouettes appear strong without any loss or damage. The glasses have tiny imperfections, suggesting they, too, are period. The mats are made from rag content paper of the period. There are inked inscriptions on the backboards: Year 1782; Ingraham; Sarah Wells; Russell Wells. If they are indeed of those two people, then we have the following: Sarah Carter Wells, b.14 Jan 1753, Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticutd.1 Nov 1844 (aged 91), Cranberry Creek, Fulton County, New York Russell Wells b.27 Mar 1758, Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticutd. 9 Jul 1838 (aged 80), Cranberry Creek, Fulton County, New York This is a superb pair of silhouettes, as found and untouched. Modern hanging wires. All you need to do is to hang them and enjoy.
