In November 1963, President John F. Kennedy, a charismatic and popular president from Massachusetts, the youngest President the country had ever elected, was in a motorcade touring Dallas. He and the First Lady were in the back seat of an open-air convertible when President Kennedy was shot from an upper window of an adjacent building by an assassin. The President died that day in what then was an unimaginable act of political violence. And life in America seemed to stop. A bystander caught the horrific scene with his movie camera focused squarely on the the President and First Lady. The country was deeply shaken. It has come to be called 'The day America lost its innocence.'Just 5 months afterward, the Kennedy half dollar was hurried into circulation. The first day banks distributed them, there were widespread reports that people had lined up for blocks before the bank doors even opened. By the end of that day, widespread reports were that all banks ran out of the new half dollars by noon. The Historic Bicentennial Kennedys are always collectible.
